Obsession
and Straightline join King Racing effort
The King Racing Top Fuel Bike
team today announced that Obsession Motorsports and Straightline Racing
have joined the push to regain the European crown they first won in 2001.
Their support, alongside that of their existing associate sponsors, has
ensured that King Racing will contest all rounds of the FIM / UEM Dragbike
Championship.
The
most prestigious international championship in dragbike racing will see
current European Record holders King Racing in action at Finland, Sweden,
Norway, Germany and the two UK rounds, as well as exhibition events to be
staged in the UK and Athens, Greece.
Team principal Ian King said
today:- “We are enormously
grateful to Terry and Tina Gibbs of Obsession Motorsports for their
support in helping us overcome the enormous obstacle posed by the costs of
international travel. With Terry and Tina `oiling the wheels’ to reach
an agreement with Andy Carter of the First National Telecom Top Fuel team,
our operation will join his Top Fuel car in the recently acquired trailer
on his own effort to regain the FIA Top Fuel championship crown. Terry and
Tina have once again shown their passion and support for furthering
dragracing in Europe.”
Ian continued:
“In
one way, it’s natural that we should hook up with Andy’s effort as we
made history together in the 2001 season by becoming the first two British
competitors to win the European Bike and Car championships with Top Fuel
machines in the same season. With Andy’s agreement, Obsession
Motorsports support, and further help from Nick Pepper and Chris
Tombleson’s Straightline Racing we hope to make this season as
successful as the last time we competed in the full championship. We wish
to thank Andy and his team for accommodating us in this way, and, of
course, the continued support of our associate sponsors”.

The car will officially be known as the ‘1st National Telecom Top Fuel

6/10 CARTER
GETS MAJOR SPONSORSHIP
Carter Motorsport are proud to
announce major sponsorship for 2003. 1st National Telecom Services Ltd
have confirmed their full backing for next season and are delighted to be
associated with the FIA championship winning team. 'First National
Telecom's strategic vision is to be the leading distribution company of
prepaid telecoms products to the retail and consumer markets, within the
UK' says Gary MacDonald of First National. 'Our association with Carter
Motorsport will enable us to put the First National brand in front of a
huge audience. We believe that other motorsports are going to benefit
greatly from the decline of F1's popularity and see Drag Racing as a great
contender to gain this audience.' he continued.
The deal will enable Andy Carter to contest the full FIA programme as well
as other invitationals, guest appearances and shows. 'I see this
association as a major step forward for Carter Motorsport. To have full
backing will improve so many areas of our operation, so who knows what can
be achieved in 2003? I would like to take this opportunity to thank
everyone who has supported the team over the years both financially and

3/9 EURO
FINALS PREVIEW
How quickly a season goes! Here
at DragsterWorld we can't believe its the FIA season finale already, but
it is and it looks as if it will be a great finale. The Top Fuel
championship looks set to go down to the wire, Kim Reymond is leading at
the moment and looks to be a safe bet for the title but never discount Britain's
Barry Sheavills who is only 35 points behind Reymond. With the late entry
of Andy Carter bringing the field up to 8 we should see some great
racing in Top Fuel. In the Nitro FC championship John Spuffard only has to
qualify and negotiate the first round (win or lose) to take the title. Top
Methanol Dragster appears to be another two horse race. Peter Schoefer is
40 points ahead of Brit Dave Wilson. In Top Methanol Funny Car there are
10 entries so more points are on offer. Micke Kagarad will have to work
hard to defend his 48 point lead from challenges by Lex Joon , Urs Urbacher
and Leif Andreasson. There are 7 Pro Stocks entered and the championship
is very tight. Only 22 points separate Michael Malgren and Jan Muren.
All other classes have huge entries, there are 14 Pro
Modified's this
being a round of the Nordic Pro Mod championship. Brits Andy Robinson,
John Ellis and Phil Englefield will be trying there hardest to take the
spoils from Patrik Wikstrom, Haken Nilsson and Freddy Fagerstrom. 9.90
Bike has a huge entry of 35 which should make for some exciting racing.
The long range weather forecast is looking reasonable
at the moment but im sure Michael Fish & co will have change their
minds several times by the weekend.
You'd be mad to miss it!
Ticket prices, an entry and running order for the
event are all available on www.santapod.com

TO RACE AT HOCKENHEIM
DragsterWorld are pleased to
announce that Andy Carter will be competing in this years Nitro Olympics
at Hockenheim, Germany this August. The event organized by racer Rico
Anthes takes place on the 16th -18th August. Unfortunately this is not an
FIA round so Andy wont be able to chalk up and points but knowing Andy we
are sure he will be trying his hardest to win. “We’ve missed our
European trips this year so this is a date we are very much looking
forward to. We shall be as hungry as ever for the win and keen to remind
the competition why the number one is on our wing!” said Andy. Its no secret
that Andy was very disappointed to be unable to race in Europe this season
so DragsterWorld would like to take the opportunity to congratulate Andy
on this news and wish him the best of luck for the race.

of the event will be posted on www.andycarter.net

SUMMER
NATIONALS PREVIEW
This
weekend sees the running of a new event at Santa Pod Raceway. The SPRC organized
Summer Nationals is a sportsman only event open to cars and bikes. So far
there are a massive 230 entries, and a few more are expected. All the
usual sportsman classes are represented, the highlights being Super
Modified and the Fireforce Jet Car. The highly popular CCSE class sees the
return of Colin Lazenby in his Chevy, there certainly should be some
racing worth watching in that class.
As
spectators please try and support this event as the SPRC are taking a
slight risk organising it themselves, however if it is a success who knows
what it will turn into next year!
Entry
on the gate is £12 per day or £20 for the weekend, kids go free!
DragsterWorld
will be at the Summer Nationals on both days, we will be posting a short
report and pictures at the end of every day.

FANCIED OWNING A TOP FUELLER?
The Carter team have just
announce a unique opportunity for any race fan with some spare cash (or a
race fan who knows someone else with some spare cash). The Carter
Motorsports team are looking towards 2003 already and want to put together
"the ultimate top fuel package". The team say they already have

circuit" in Andy Carter and DragsterWorld agree, we would also add
one of the most friendly and approachable drivers as well! The team have a
great crew chief in Eddie Corr who has proven he has more than enough
tuning knowledge to create a winning combination.
The team have just acquired a workshop big enough to work on two Fuellers
at once and are now looking for sponsors to take them forward. The Carter
team are looking for corporate sponsors and complete product cover from
plugs to slicks!
Cater PR Dan Welberry adds "We are keen to talk
to any individuals who share our vision and believe they have something to
bring to the team. It could be that you have some spare time to make a few
calls or have potential sponsorship contacts? It may be you even think,
yes, I fancy coming on board as a joint team owner! At this stage, ALL
options are being considered."
"If you would like to talk further with us and
find out more please visit our pit at the weekend and ask to speak to Dan
Welberry."
DragsterWorld wish the team every luck in getting a package
together for 2003 and only wish we had the cash to help out!

The
Super Series Springnationals at Shakespeare County Raceway take
place on 4th 5th and 6th May and feature
the first round of the Nitro Funny Car championship, which is being held
over four rounds two at SCR and two at Santa Pod. Four cars have entered
this round and John Spuffard in the Showtime car must start as favorite as
they can run consistent 5.3’s. Gordon Smith will be his main threat if
they run the times they ran at Easter. Smax Smith can put down some good
times but need to be more consistent. The very experienced Gary Page has
only had one run in the North Herts Engineering car so far so needs more
track time. For more details on the championship check out the official
site at www.showtimeracing.co.uk

NEW BIKE RACER...
After
racing in 10.90 bike at one event at SCR and then at the Fireworks at the
Pod on his road bike, Steve Ingham has taken the plunge and bought the
Terminator Two bike which he has rebuilt over the winter. A recent dyno
test showed the GSXR 1216cc motor to be producing 161 hp at the rear
wheels, which is a very good figure and as Steve does all his own tuning
work one that he was very pleased with. (Personally I think it’s down to
the exhaust flanges that I made for it at work - Phil) Steve will be
trying the bike out at the Thunderball and will decide then if he is to
run in 10.90 or 9.90 bike. DragsterWorld wish Steve the best of luck for
the coming season.

KING RACING UPDATE...
After the achievements made by the King Racing Top Fuel bike team last
season in winning both the European and British Championships, you'd think
they would be sitting back and revelling in the glory of the unique double.
However, you could not be further from the truth as the team have been
beavering away over the winter months planning, building and preparing an
all-new machine for the next step in their plan to remain ahead of the
competition.
Despite the last year's
Puma chassis proving it's pedigree with faultless handling over some of the
more demanding of European surfaces, extensive modifications and all new
aluminium bodywork will enable rider Ian King to take advantage of an all
new engine and fuel system combination.
Cogniscent
of the extremely short shutdown areas of most of the tracks outside of the
US, Wheel and Brake system supremo's Performance Machine in California are
supporting the team effort with a market leading multi piston brake caliper
and disc specifically developed to provide the stopping power necessary to
bring a one tonne motorcycle from 230 mph to rest in a safe and timely
manner. Coupled with their rear `Side drive' wheel and `Chicane' front King
believes he will have a world-leading package.
Unhappy
with struggling to provide consistent performances whilst using a standard
(but heavily modified) Yamaha FJ cylinder head, King has a new all billet
piece under construction in the workshops of North Herts Engineering (owners
of the Bates / Wilding / Page Fuel Funnycar).
Despite
the vogue for 2 Valve designs, King has opted for the more efficient (but
more delicate) 4-valve design.
But,
it is in the fuel supply and management department that King plans the most
significant changes. From last years tried and tested pressure system, an
all new system of fuel timers will now ensure that King has maximum control
over when and how much fuel is delivered as he progresses down the track.
This all-new system is to be fed by one of Watermans's finest pumps,
therefore lack of fuel should not be a problem.
Finally,
to ensure that form coincides with function, House of Kolor UK have provided
their superlative paint finishes, applied by Image Paintworks own Simon
Butterworth.
So,
with so many changes to the leading European machine, it is likely that
early season performances will see modest results whilst King gets the 1000
hp machine dialled in. But when he does, watch out…………….

3/2 SUPER
MODIFIED IS GO...
Sharon Hogarth, administrator for the
Super Modified class, has announced the 2002 season dates for the class.
Although not running as a National Championship class this year they still
have 7 rounds at two tracks which should see an exciting points chase.
There will be a maximum of 16 cars in each round and if last years demo
races where anything to go by I would think there might be more than 16
entries per round which should make qualifying interesting. The rounds are
as follows.
Rd 1. SPR…Easter
Thunderball 30th March to 1st April
Rd 2. SCR…Super Series Spring Nats
4th to 6th May
Rd 3. SCR…American Car Nats 15th and 16th June

Rd 5. SPR…Bug Jam 20th
and 21st July
Rd 6. SCR…Summer Nationals 24th to 26th August
Rd 7. SPR…National Finals 28th and 29th September
An
interesting calendar with a real mix of events, other demonstration events
may be added but will not be part of the championship, also look out for
the soon to be launched website.

SUMMER NATIONALS RETURN...
Santa
Pod Racers Club (SPRC) have announced that they are to run a meeting on
the 29th/30th June, a date left vacant by Santa Pods decision not to run
the Cannonball this year. The meeting will be a sportsman event and will
feature the usual classes including Super Modified, VW and the CCSE. The
meeting will also be a round of the National and ACU championships.
Although there are no plans to run Pro Cars this year if the event is a
success who knows what may happen in future years. The organizers are
hoping for around 200 entries o it should be well worth attending. The financial
risk is being taken by SPRC so we should all try to support the event because
if they lose money I doubt it will be on the calendar next year., and that
will be another meeting lost. So mark the date in your diaries now and be
there!

AUTOSPORT SHOW REPORT...
The
Autosport Show at Birmingham's NEC has seen only a few drag racing
exhibits over the last few years but this year was different. I visited on
the final day of the show (Sunday) and was very impressed with our sports
profile at the show. The first Drag racing related stand I found was the
AC Delco one. An impressive and professional looking
stand had Michael Malmgren’s Pro Stock as the main feature. Also
on the stand was a video wall showing FIA Pro Stock and Top Fuel and two
simulators linked to a tree for the public to test their reaction times.
I believe they are going to be at the Pod this season as well. The Santa
Pod stand was also good with the Mobile shop as the centre piece
surrounded by four cars and two bikes which showed the public a range
of race machines from Nitro Funny car to Junior Dragster also on the stand was Andy Carter/CBD Top Fuel car,
they should have been on the Motorsport News stand but the space they had
allocated was too small so the car was put on the Pod’s stand. I
thought the car was in a better position on Pod's stand than where it should have been so maybe
they gained from the problem. Now I may be biased but as I looked round
the rest of the show I didn’t see anything as impressive as the Drag
racing exhibits, had they have put John Spuffard’s Showtime Funny Car
in with the mock up of an F1 grid
no one would have given the F1’s a second look! Why companies
pour millions into F1 is beyond me but as I said I’m biased! Custom Car
had another very impressive display of five
Street Eliminator cars, Jon Webster's new Mustang looked fantastic.
They had a video of racing being played which had a large crowd gathered
round it. I think the public must have been impressed with the cars but probably
had a job believing that they were all street legal cars. To
sum up I think that this show must have done the sport a lot of good and
let’s hope that some of those people who were looking round the
stand’s become fan’s. - Phil

MORE FLAME AND THUNDER NEWS...
Latest news about the Top Fuel grudge
race at the Flame and Thunder, Andy Carter felt that something didn’t
feel right with the car when it hit tyre shake on his run so rather than pedaling
it he clicked it off. When he got back to the pits he found that the
coupler had come out. It was a good job Andy didn't hit the throttle again
on the run as it could have cost them an engine... a case of many
years experience paying off. The same problem occurred during Gary
Page’s run in the car during the afternoon. The car bracket was taken by
Al Platt and the Bike bracket by Richard Every. Nigel Green won VW Pro ,
Steve Lee VW Sportsman and Joe Bond won junior dragster.
