MILE HIGH HOT ROD REUNION |
|
| Despite having a a far colder
climate than traditional hot-rodding states like California, Colorado has
a long history of 'rodding and automotive racing. Today that history was
celebrated at the Mile High Hot Rod Reunion, hosted at the spectacular
mountain-side Bandimere Speedway. The event comprises a show of pre '75
hot rods, dragsters and race cars, memorabilia and a challenge race.
Although a quite small the event was very well organised by a small band
of volunteers. On entry everyone was given a badge and lanyard with their
name on and a goodie bag full of stickers, discount coupons for local
businesses and even a small US flag! Around 50 cars were entered for the
show, ranging from street rods to muscle cars to front engine dragsters to
funny bikes. All were very well prepared and looked great collected
together. All profits from the event went to "Race To Read", a
program organised by Bandimere Speedway to help local school children.
Some of the children involved in the program were at the track to pick
winners from the show.
In all an enjoyable couple of hours, had we had seen less cloud and more of the famous Colorado sunshine we may have seen a few more cars on display.... but as they say, quality is better than quantity. Here are a few photos for you to enjoy.
An injected alcohol dragster.
Don't think I would fancy that between my legs!
A turbocharged Suzuki Funny Bike.
Entrants for the challenge race were picked from those who had pre-registered for the reunion. All races were run using 5 or 6 identical Camero Z28's. Times were around the 14 second mark.
A nice pair of flamed street rods.
Several people were honored for their contribution to motorsport in Colorado. This was a collection of memorabilia for father and son racing team Vern and Brian Raymer. The NHRA Trophies or "Wally's" were awarded for wins in Top Alcohol.
One of the event organizers, Pete Garramone, talks about those honored at the event.
A Bonneville Salt Flats Racer. That's all.... hope you enjoyed that short look at Colorado's automotive history.
