ULTIMATE STREET CAR - SANTA POD
10th August 2002
Back To Event Reports

I hadn't been to the Ultimate Street Car event for about 4 or 5 years now but, after hearing a few racers would be in attendance I decided to pop along today. The weather started out very cloudy and it looked like we would have some rain but as the day went on it got a lot brighter and at one point quite warm. The crowd was extremely healthy. The campsite was packed and there was a lot of people on the bank watching the racing. The pits were busy, there was lots of cars showing off sound systems and a large number of trade stalls selling cut-price car accessories.

The racing came in R.W.Y.B form and the track was busy all day long, at one point the queue for the fire up road stretched back past the toilet block on the pit side! What was the racing like, not great unfortunately. Once I'd seen one 17second Nova I didn't really want to see another 20! Having said that the competitors seemed to be enjoying themselves. I think this is the sort of racing you enjoy more when you are either racing or have a mate who is racing.

Highlight of the day was a 'proper race car' session which happened around 2.10pm. The crowd seemed to really enjoy seeing what the cars could do. Lets hope some of them will be encourage to come along in September. For details of who ran and their times see below.

As this meeting was called Ultimate Street Car it would have been nice to see an ultimate street car! Perhaps the CCSE Eliminator people could consider having a display at next years show. Perhaps they could even have a few cars doing passes or even an extra round of the championship held there. Im sure the crowd would love to see 8 second street cars and it may prompt them to get more involved in the sport.

In all a very well attended meeting which any 'Max Power' fan would love.

We've posted some photos below... hope you enjoy them.

Peter Wacker debuted his Andy Robison built '57 Chevy today. Its lovely! Peter fired the car up in the pits this morning and it looked as though they were having a few problems... how wrong I was! Peter came out at 2.10pm and in his first ever run in the car put in a storming pass, 7.30 at 167.87mph! Peter said "the car started to go side to side so I had to lift a bit. I was very pleased with the run though."

Ian Bishop had luck on his side this morning. He decided to put a pass in before the track had been prepped. The car came off the line really hard but just before half track the car lost grip and turned to sharply to the left, then back to the right, then left again. He came quite close to the barrier and ended up in the wrong lane. Ian did a fantastic driving job and somehow managed to keep the car on the deck, avoid the barrier and even drove between the reflectors in the middle of the track! Unsurprisingly Ian didn't come out again until after the track had been prepped  at lunch!

Later on in the day Ian came out and put in a 8.31 at 162mph. Ian still seemed to struggle for grip at half track.

I believe this Mustang is street legal, not sure what class it will be in but it ran an 11.99 at 116mph today.

Sean Latham gets both wheels off the ground on his way to a 9.36 at 136mph.

Peter Wacker's old car is now being campaigned by Dave Hughes. I believe the car will be running in Super Comp. Dave ran a 10.87 at 122mph today.

This Mini was clicking off 11's for most of the day.

A very wide exhaust!

The queue for the fire up road!

That's for stopping by... hope you found it interesting.
